Anxiety is a reaction to stress and can actually be beneficial in some situations. For some people, however, anxiety can become excessive. A person with anxiety disorder may have difficulty controlling it and the continued anxiety may negatively affect their day-to-day living. Anxiety disorders include post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorder to name a few. Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental disorders experienced by Americans.

  • Excessive and unrealistic worry about everyday tasks or events
  • Avoiding specific places or tasks
  • Irritability
  • Agitation or tenseness
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Appetite disturbance

Simple phobias:

Involve excessive anxiety caused by specific objects (e.g., marked fear of snakes).

Social phobias:

Are fears of interacting with others, particularly in large groups.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD):

The individual experiences an obsession– an intrusive and recurrent thought, idea, sensation or feeling – together with a compulsion – a behavior that is recurrent, ritualized, and excessive, such as checking, avoiding, or counting.

In addition to being helped by medications, anxiety disorders are often addressed by exposure (to the object or eventobsessed over), exploration and resolution of underlying causes of anindividual’s anxiety, and learning stress reduction and self-care techniques.
